Welcome to Fall Quarter

Dear Colleagues,
I hope the new quarter is going well for each of you. I’ve been fortunate to spend some time talking with students this week, in the Main Quad and other parts of campus, and I’ve found it both gratifying and energizing to hear their excitement about coming to campus this fall.
I’m also very proud of two other recent events. On the heels of our collegewide Opening Day last Thursday, our Welcome Day for students on Friday was a tremendous success. Almost 2,000 students RSVP’d for this event, bringing with them friends, parents, and other family members, with our estimated total attendees close to 3,000. Based on the excitement of the day and early survey responses, our students were enthusiastic to learn about their Villages and other programs and services on campus, and felt very welcome at De Anza. As you read in the Quick News on Tuesday and Chancellor Miner's email last night, the Board of Governors has approved a proposal from our highly regarded Auto Tech Department to offer De Anza’s first-ever bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology Management. This new program was years in the making, and my congratulations and thanks to each of you involved. The four-year degree is a great example of innovative thinking that will expand the academic and career opportunities available to students.
As we move forward into fall quarter, I am certain there will be more good news to share and more good work accomplished, on accreditation preparation and beyond. As just one example, I'm looking forward to College Council's shared governance retreat on Oct. 21.
On a different topic, I know that some of you have concerns about the recent change in district policy regarding face masks. While masks are no longer required across the board, we have notified students that masks are still strongly recommended and may be required in individual classrooms or offices. The Office of Communications has created various signs that can be downloaded and printed to alert visitors of such a requirement in your area, available at deanza.edu/communications/mask-signs. If you have any questions, please speak with your dean or manager.
I'm looking forward to our first Conversation and Q&A With Senior Staff this Monday – you should have a calendar invitation with the Zoom details. And if you see me around campus, please do stop and say hello.
